The Saltwater Crocodile |
Crocodylus porosus |
The Saltwater Crocodile is the largest and most aggressive of all reptiles. This one should be feared. In length it could exceed 21 feet and there are tales of some 30 feet individuals. This species inhabits the Indopacific Sea. Large mammals, like buffalo and human beings, are included in its diet. Other common names used on this species include estuarine crocodile.
The nest measures about nine feet around and three high, where 30 to 90 eggs are laid. The mother stays close by during the the 90 days they take to hatch. During this time she protects the nest and helps the youngster as they come out.
These crocodiles are common north of Australia where once in a while one of them feeds on cattle. They have been recorded inland far inside the continent. They have also been documented out in the open sea, south of Asia, at more than 600 miles from shore.
On the oceans they can navigate for long distances. They let the currents take them, rather than actually swim. And in these waters they are as fearfull as the sharks.
There are quite a few tales, some well documented, of massive attacks by these crocodiles on human beings. We have herd of some very bad ones during World War II. Estimates run at a thousand human death every year due to these reptiles.
No subspecies are recognized of this crocodile. Although we have seen those living close by Ceylon been considered a subspecies by some authors.
